Timothy Hon Hung Lee

Timothy Hon Hung Lee

Timothy Hon Hung Lee’s illustrations instantly evoke far away idylls; scenes from mythical books of flowing concubines, delicate and detailed flowers, worshipped deities, and exotic destinations.

Working in pen and ink on paper Lee’s illustrations are meticulously detailed - the unforgiving medium rendering his art all the more remarkable and valuable. Working on either Chinese rice paper or calligraphy paper - delicate surfaces that have a sense of fragility which the artist is drawn to - each illustration is lavished with minute detail and the most impressive illustrative techniques. “I have worked with computers, but always felt disassociated with my end product,” explains Lee. “On a personal level I need something that exists in reality; that reacts to its surroundings.”

Sex, violence, and morality are key themes running throughout his work. On an aesthetic level, Lee’s drawings depict people in various scenes or situations, often dressed in traditional Chinese clothing from past eras, inviting comparisons to the late-18th Century Romantics, and making Lee one of Britain’s most exciting emerging young artists.
