Literal-Eyes-30 artists from across Europe translate their favourite works of literature into visual masterpieces.
Opening reception: Thursday, May 12th 2011. 6pm to 11pm. Exhibition on show: May 13th to May 16th 2011
Location: 65 Hanbury Street. East London. EI 5JP (LONDON MILES GOES EAST!)
London Miles is proud to present an all-new group exhibition that takes a closer look at the content found inside the dusty book covers of iconic written works by great literary masters from across all generations. Literal-eyes concentrates specifically at the ways in which great writers have inspired this hand selected group of young and emerging European artists to be the painters they are today.
Whether inspired by a novel, poem, or a poignant phrase from their chosen literary piece, 30 artists are recreating how they visually and literally interpret their all time favourite piece of narrative into a real life painting. Iconic writers whose narratives are being recreated include the all famous children’s favourite and cartoonist Dr. Seuss to our very own national literary hero; William Shakespeare. Artists have chosen their literary works from a broad range of authors, as well as foreign writers relevant to their home origin. Some examples include, digital painter Tom Bagshaw who will recreate ‘A Midsommers Night Dream’ by Shakespeare, Nom Kinnear King paints ‘The House of Sprits’ by Isabel Allende and Camilla D’Errico takes inspiration from the Opera “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.Throughout time, literature has been an all-important source of inspiration, aiding us to visualize things we may not have seen in real life. Literature is an outlet to escape our day-to-day grind, taking us on a journey to experience and see the world through someone else’s eyes. We read poems, plays and novels to be given a new perspective or to gain valuable and further knowledge on other peoples life experiences; it is another way for us to communicate though the powerful medium of language. Literal-eyes highlights the way in which a picture as well as a painting can speak a thousand words, adding great emphasis on the exceptionally close link between language and art.
London Miles will be looking into the depths of the artist’s psyche; their individual artwork will reveal their way of thinking which maybe totally disparate to how we visualize the same text. This comparison will be explored individually by the viewer and will allow great scope for various levels of interaction during the exhibition. To mark this special exhibition, London Miles will be taking over a white wall gallery space in East London, an exciting pop up space divided onto two floors and over 1000 sq ft; situated off Brick lane.
